Connecting to Web Map Services (WMS)

From a WMS-compatible client, you can establish a connection to the map service of interest using this URL format:

http://igsmap1.indiana.edu/wmsconnector/com.esri.wms.Esrimap?ServiceName=[Map Service]

Replace "[Map Service]" with information from the map services list below.

  2. Click the Add Data button.
  3. In the Add Data dialog box, choose GIS Servers.
  4. Double-click Add ArcIMS Server.
  5. Enter the URL for the server. For example, to connect to the Geodetic Control Framework WMS service enter: http://igsmap1.indiana.edu/wmsconnector/com.esri.wms.Esrimap?ServiceName=fw_geodetic_control

Connecting to ArcIMS Services from ArcMap

ESRI software users can load IndianaMap layers directly into their software using Web Map Services (WMS), hosted by the Indiana Geological Survey in partnership with IGIC. The goal is to support Open GIS standards for platform-independent services.

Connecting to ArcIMS Services

These instructions are for use with ESRI ArcMap software. Follow them to create a connection to the map services and use the data in ArcMap.

  1. Open ArcMap.
  2. Click the Add Data button.
  3. In the Add Data dialog box, from the "Look In" drop-down menu, choose GIS Servers.
  4. Double-click Add ArcIMS Server.
  5. Enter the URL for the server: http://inmap.indiana.edu
  6. Choose from the framework data services below or the default All services option and click OK.

Fw_boundaries_govt_units - The different types of boundaries the government uses to organize itself and information.

Fw_cadastral - The basis for all land ownership mapping. It is used to show past, current and future rights and interest in real property, surveys, legal descriptions, parcels, cadastral reference systems (e.g. PLSS, and publicly administered parcels like military bases or state parks).

Fw_elevation - Topography and elevations of land surfaces.

Fw_geodetic_control - Reference system of monumented points and GPS control stations.

Fw_hydrography - Surface water features such as lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, canals, and shorelines.

    Fw_ortho_imagery - Orthophotography

Fw_transportation - Roads, trails, railroads, waterways, and airports; may include street center line and address range information.

Fw_indiana_basemap - Selected layers from all the above categories, including boundaries, cadastral, elevation, geodetic control, ortho imagery and transportation.

  7. In the Add Data dialog box, double-click the "http://inmap.indiana.edu" connection to view available map services.
  8. Select one or more map services and click Add to load the map services into ArcMap.
  9. After you've established the connection the first time, you can add the services to other map projects later by simply repeating steps 3, 7 and 8. Add your own data on top. ArcMap will automatically save the Map Services settings with your .mxd project file.
