by NEW - 118th General Assembly
Two new layers showing the results of the last election for the 118th Indiana General Assembly -Senate and House of Representatives have been added to the map. The 118th Indiana General Assembly convenes on January 8, 2013. These data replace the two layers published in 2011 that showed the results of the redistricted legislative boundaries for Indiana, established for 2011-2021. Attributes include the name of the legislator, district number, party affiliation, and a link to the legislator's Web site (Note: some Web sites still point to legislators from 117th G.A., the state is updating these links).
The Indiana General Assembly consists of two houses, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Indiana has a part-time legislature that does not meet year-round. The General Assembly convenes on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in January. During odd-numbered years the legislature meets for 61 days (not necessarily consecutively) and must be adjourned by April 30. During even-numbered years the legislature meets for 30 days (not necessarily consecutively) and must be adjourned by March 15. Members are elected from districts that are realigned every ten years. Representatives (100 in total) serve terms of two years and senators (50 in total) serve terms of four years. Both houses can create bills, but bills must pass both houses before it can be submitted to the governor and enacted into law.
