Overview

Generate a KML/KMZ file from IndianaMap Web Map Services to use in Google Earth. http://maps.indiana.edu/arcgis/rest/services

With IndianaMap Generate KML/KMZ you can:

  • Use the KML/KMZ file with Google Earth

Browser requirements

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 9.0 or above
  • Mozilla Firefox, version 10.0 or above
  • Google Chrome, version 12.0 or above
  • Safari, version 5.0 or above


User Guide

Generate KML/KMZ Operation

  • Open IndianaMap Web Map Services
    • Select one of the ArcGIS Service Folders from the list to display its Web Map Services
    • Click a layer within the folder to open the Web Map Service
  • Do not click the Google Earth link at the top of the Web Map Service. That link is not supported
  • Scroll to the bottom of the services page
    • Click the Generate KML button to create a KML file to view in Google Earth
  • In the Generate KML dialog box:
    • Add a Document Name
    • Check the Layers box beside the Layer title
    • From the Layer Options select “Vector layers as vectors and raster layers as images”
  • Click the Generate KML button
    • Save the file on your computer. The file extension is KMZ, which is a compressed KML file. Google Earth can open KML and KMZ files

Open the KML/KMZ in Google Earth

  • Open Google Earth software on your computer.
  • From the toolbar click File.
  • Click Open from the dropdown list. Navigate to the KML/KMZ file you created and select that file
  • Zoom in to Indiana from Google Earth to view the IndianaMAP Web Map Service data
